Just east of Colorado Springs (and a small jog North), you’ll find this sweet corner of Colorado. It’s where you stop before the crowds and congestion, where there’s plenty of room to stretch out and lay down some roots. Enjoy this prairie town while still having the Rocky Mountains out your windows. You can take in quite a bit of the range from Peyton.
Peyton was settled in 1888, which feels about right for this sprung-from-the-ground western town. And it will seem like it, too, when you visit Maggie’s General Store and Stagecoach Liquor. Your favorite local products will be available, like pastries, honey and preserves.
But don’t stop there, you’ll want to take the whole family to Homestead Ranch Park, part of Black Forest. More than 450 acres await the outdoor lover who will find a wide range of animal life that visit the spring-fed pond.
Paint Mines Interpretive Park is even bigger and really highlights the uniqueness of this area. Walk among the hoodoos (rock formations) and enjoy the pristine countryside. It’s named for the brightly-colored paints that Native Americans made from regional clay.
This is the perfect area for someone who likes their breathing room but knows the mountains and city are nearby. The prairie is calling you home!
