Welcome to the small, but perfectly placed rural town north east of Colorado Springs on U.S. Route 24, Calhan Colorado! Founded in 1888 because of rail road building, the center of town historically sits at 6,508 feet of elevation. Prospectors Point even reaches up to 7,204 feet above sea level, making it the highest point between Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains and the highest nonmMountain town in the United States.
Since 1905 Calhan has been home to the famous El Paso County Fair. Originally started by farmers to celebrate the potato harvest, this celebratory center now hosts 2000 seats in an outdoor pavilion with numerous types of events per year.
If you are staying in Calhan for a weekend – or you are deciding to call it home, here are some classic must-visit places!
The El Paso Country Raceway is a quarter-mile dirt road and home of some of Colorados most fun car races.
One mile south of Calhan are the Paint Mines. This is a popular destination for people all over the world; primarily nature lovers, hikers and bird watchers. Even with over 4 miles of trails, there is not enough time and distance to capture the beauty of this Colorado area. Perhaps one of the most fascinating facts about the Mines is that there is archaeological evidence dating back to about 9,000 years ago.
